Israeli tanks have advanced on the Gaza City district of Shujayea trapping civilians amid intense fighting, according to Al Jazeera correspondents.

Exclusive footage obtained by Al Jazeera shows the Israeli military using Palestinian prisoners as human shields to search for explosives in Gaza.

Israel’s military has said 18 of its soldiers were injured, one of them seriously, when a drone struck their position in the occupied Golan Heights, which borders Lebanon.

At least 37,877 people have been killed and 86,969 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks is estimated at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Israeli military bulldozers destroy roads in Tulkarem, impose siege on Nur Shams camp

Two Israeli military bulldozers have destroyed roads during a raid on Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank, the Wafa news agency is reporting.

Israeli forces also imposed a siege on the Nur Shams refugee camp, in Tulkarem, with Israeli soldiers raiding homes and high-rise buildings as Israeli snipers were deployed on roofs, Wafa reported.

The Tulkarem Brigade, a group of Palestinian fighters from West Bank refugee camps, said they detonated an explosive device in an Israeli military bulldozer at the entrance to the Tulkarem camp, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report.

The raid comes after an Israeli strike on a home in Nur Shams camp killed a Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander and injured five others.

What we know about Israel’s ground invasion of Shujayea

Israeli troops descended on Shujayea, in northern Gaza City, with tanks and drones on Thursday. Residents who remained in the neighbourhood told Al Jazeera and the AFP that they felt trapped by the Israeli strikes and intense fighting.

Israeli troops are expecting to remain in Shujayea for weeks, the Jerusalem Post has reported, with the Israeli army seeking to destroy Hamas tunnels it “missed during the first time through”, months after the Israeli army claimed to have “dismantled” Hamas in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu also mentioned Shujayea on Sunday, saying that Israeli forces are engaged in a “difficult fight” above and below ground in “Rafah, Shujayea, everywhere in the Gaza Strip”.

According to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, The Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, have said they are waging fierce battles against Israeli soldiers and tanks in Shujayea.

‘Our lives have become hell’, Shujayea residents trapped by Israeli strikes

Siham al-Shawa, a 50-year-old resident of Shujayea told the AFP news agency that conditions in the Shujayea neighbourhood of Gaza City have deteriorated after the Israeli ground invasion began on Thursday.

“Our lives have become hell”, al-Shawa told the AFP, adding that people felt trapped since strikes could happen “anywhere” and “it is difficult to get out of the neighbourhood under fire”.

“We do not know where to go to protect ourselves,” she added.

The UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA estimated that “60,000 to 80,000 people were displaced” from Shujayea since new fighting broke out there on Thursday and the Israeli army issued evacuation orders.
