global timesIn response to the US tariffs on Canadian products, Canadians have begun organizing efforts of their own to counteract US tariffs, with some heeding calls by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to prioritize buying Canadian-made products and boycott US goods as much as possible, local media reported.
Some Canadians have actively opted for Canadian-made products in supermarkets, while others have compiled lists of US products to boycott, Canadian media CBC reported.
Giancarlo Trimarchi, past chair of the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers and president of Vince's Market in Sharon, Ontario, stated that he has introduced "Made in Canada" tags to help consumers easily identify locally produced goods in supermarkets, according to CBC.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday night told Canadians they could do their part, essentially urging a grass-roots boycott of US products they rely on in their daily lives. He made the remarks during a Saturday night speech, announcing Canada's retaliatory measures in response to a 25 percent tariff US President Donald Trump imposed on imported Canadian goods, Politico reported.
"It might mean checking the labels at the supermarket and picking Canadian-made products. It might mean opting for Canadian rye over Kentucky bourbon, or foregoing Florida orange juice altogether. It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada," Trudeau said, according to Politico.
Some authorities in Canadian provinces such as Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia have announced plans to remove American liquor brands from government store shelves, ABC reported.
Toronto Star reported that many shelves in a liquor store in Vancouver, British Columbia, now stand empty, replaced with signs that read "Buy Canadian Instead" sitting on these lone shelves.
In addition to boycotting US goods, Canadians have vented anger through various other measures following US threat of tariffs on Canadian imports.
Canadian hockey fans in Ottawa booed the Star-Spangled Banner during a National Hockey League game against a visiting US team on Saturday, shortly after the US announced its latest steep tariffs on Canada, according to BBC.
On Sunday, during another National Basketball Association game between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers, it happened again, continuing throughout the song and almost drowning out the 15-year-old's singer's arena performance, according to the BBC report.
