Israel says more attacks to come as air strikes kill over 400 in Gaza

By Lyndal Rowlands

UN chief Antonio Guterres says he is “outraged by the Israeli air strikes in Gaza”, joining a chorus of international condemnation as more than 400 Palestinians have been killed, including many women and children.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the new bombardment is “only the beginning” and that all negotiations for the shattered Gaza ceasefire, which lasted just under two months, will now take place “under fire”.

Palestinians in Gaza are fleeing their homes and shelters again after Israel issued new forced displacement orders.

Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif al-Qanou says the group is “dealing responsibly and positively with whatever is proposed to stop the aggression and lift the siege” on Gaza, with Israel’s total blockade reaching a 17th day.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 48,577 Palestinians have been confirmed dead and 112,041 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. Gaza’s Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

Israeli attacks overnight on Gaza described as nonstop

We reported earlier that Israeli raids on southern Gaza’s Khan Younis and Rafah cities killed at least 14 people.

Our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues and local Palestinian media also report the following in a night of attacks on Gaza that “did not stop”:

  •     Three people were reported killed in an Israeli attack on a family home in the Sabra area of Gaza City.
  •     Israeli helicopter gunships and quadcopters, together with artillery, were reported east of the Zeitoun neighbourhood in Gaza City.
  •     A residential home was attacked in Deir el-Balah, in central Gaza, and a helicopter fired near Netzarim and north of central Gaza.
  •     Israeli helicopter fire and artillery shelling were reported east of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.
  •     Shooting by Israeli ground forces was reported northwest of Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza.
  •     Israeli warplanes raided the al-Mawasi area to the west of Khan Younis and bombed a home in Deir el-Balah.

More from Mahmoud Khalil’s letter from Louisiana jail

Here’s more from the letter the former Columbia graduate student and Palestinian activist dictated over the phone to his family from the detention facility where he says he is being held as a political prisoner.

“I have always believed that my duty is not only to liberate myself from the oppressor, but also to liberate my oppressors from their hatred and fear,” Khalil wrote.

“My unjust detention is indicative of the anti-Palestinian racism that both the Biden and Trump administrations have demonstrated over the past 16 months as the US has continued to supply Israel with weapons to kill Palestinians and prevented international intervention,” he said.

Khalil described being born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria and noted his current circumstances have “similarities to Israel’s use of administrative detention – imprisonment without trial or charge – to strip Palestinians of their rights”.
