Russian air attacks have targeted Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and northeastern city of Kharkiv, killing at least one person and injuring nearly 20 others, according to local authorities.
The violence comes as negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the United States are set to meet in
Abu Dhabion Saturday for the second day of negotiations on a plan being pushed by US President Donald Trump to end the almost four-year-long war.
The first known direct contact between Ukrainian and Russian officials on the proposal began
on Friday.
Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said the discussions focused “on the parameters for ending Russia’s war and the further logic of the negotiation process”.
Russia pushes for ‘Anchorage formula’ to settle territorial issue with Ukraine
A senior Russian foreign ministry official has said Moscow is seeking to settle its territorial issues with Ukraine using what he called the “Anchorage formula”, an agreement reached between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin during talks last summer.
Not much is known about what was agreed between Trump and Putin, but Dmitry Peskov, Russia’s spokesperson, said Russia expected Ukraine to withdraw from Luhansk and Donetsk. That would pave the way for formal annexation of the war-torn eastern Ukrainian regions by Russia.
“The most important thing now – and this was stated at the meeting with the Americans on January 22-23 – is to resolve the territorial issue using the Anchorage formula, without which a long-term settlement is unattainable,” Alexei Polishchuk, a Russian diplomat told RIA Novostia, a Russian state-owned news agency.
He added that it was necessary to “eradicate the root causes of the crisis”, created by what he said was the “West’s participation” in Ukraine.
Child among 14 wounded in ‘massive’ Russian aerial attack on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service says at least 14 people were wounded – including one child – amid a “massive” round of Russian drone attacks in the northeastern Kharkiv region, including the city of Kharkiv.
Fires broke out at various locations, the service wrote on Telegram, burning high-rise apartments, commercial buildings, a medical facility and a dormitory.
Photos shared by the service showed emergency workers taming flames on residential rooftops and breaking down walls.
More than 130 rescuers, along with police, medics and volunteers fanned out across the district. They successfully pulled five people from a four-story building, including a child, in the Industrialnyi district.
Energy system ‘hanging by a thread’, says Ukrainian politician
Kira Rudik, a Ukrainian opposition member of parliament in Kyiv, has written this post on X describing the Russian attack this morning.
“Explosions are shaking the city,” she said. “With the energy system hanging by a thread, we’re praying our Air Defense can hold and save it today.”
Overnight Russian attack on Kyiv kills 1, wounds 4
At least one person has been killed and four wounded in a spree of attacks on the Ukrainian capital that hit at least five districts, local officials say.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram that three of the four injured people had been hospitalised with serious wounds, with the fourth person treated by a doctor.
The attacks caused multiple fires across the city, while falling debris damaged a number of residential, office and medical buildings, according to the capital’s head of the military administration, Tymur Tkachenko.
A recap of recent developments on the ground
The Russian Defence Ministry has said its troops captured the Ukrainian village of Symynivka, located about 47km (29 miles) northeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Russian attacks in the Nikopol district, located in Dnipropetrovsk region, killed one elderly man and injured two more people yesterday, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Attacks also targeted three other districts in Dnipropetrovsk, triggering fires and damaging homes, infrastructure and cars, the service said.
Ukraine’s overall
energy situationhas “significantly” deteriorated following Russia’s latest aerial assaults earlier this week, Ukraine’s state grid operator Ukrenergo has said.
Russia has claimed about 74sq km (29sq miles) of Ukrainian territory so far this year, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank.
These soldiers are from a country whose president is a Jew Zelensky. Orthodox churches are also being destroyed in this country. Synagogues are not touched. Surprisingly, it turns out that Jews get along well with the Bandera Nazis.
