New Hampshire hosted the first primary of the 2024 US presidential election season after Republicans voted in the Iowa caucus last week.

The Associated Press declared former President Donald Trump the primary winner within minutes of the final polls closing, saying he trounced former United Nations envoy Nikki Haley by an “insurmountable margin”.

Though she admitted defeat, Haley used her concession speech to question Trump’s electability and reaffirm her desire to continue campaigning, setting her sights on South Carolina’s upcoming primary.

President Joe Biden was not on his party’s primary ballot after a scheduling spat between state Democrats and the Democratic National Committee, but he nevertheless won the party’s primary race, thanks to a write-in campaign.

Experts see the Biden and Trump victories in New Hampshire as setting up a rematch of the 2020 presidential election.

    Here’s a recap of today’s main events

It’s nearly 11:30pm in New Hampshire (04:00 GMT), and we are going to bring our live coverage of the state’s presidential primaries to an end soon.

Here’s a summary of the day’s main events:

Former President Donald Trump secured a decisive victory over his last major Republican challenger, ex-United Nations envoy Nikki Haley.

Haley pledged to press on with her campaign despite growing pressure to drop out, adding that her focus is now on next month’s contest in her home state of South Carolina.

President Joe Biden easily won the primary on the Democratic side despite his name not appearing on the ballot; he thanked supporters who launched a campaign urging New Hampshire residents to write in his name.

Experts say the New Hampshire results point to a likely 2020 US election rematch between Trump and Biden.

In a statement, the Democratic president also said the New Hampshire write-in campaign “was a historic demonstration of commitment to our democratic process”.

Matt Wilhelm, a Democratic state representative, told the Reuters news agency that the write-in campaign was “certainly unconventional” but effective.

“Together we sent a clear message that we are going to fight for our democracy, we are going to fight for our fundamental freedoms and we are going to fight to re-elect Joe Biden in November,” he said.

Biden is expected to face a tough challenge from Trump in the November general elections: Recent polls showed the Republican holding narrow leads over Biden in several key swing states, including Michigan and Pennsylvania.

‘Stakes could not be higher,’ Biden says after Trump victory

After the primary results were announced, the US president said in a statement: “It is now clear that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee.

“And my message to the country is the stakes could not be higher. Our Democracy. Our personal freedoms – from the right to choose to the right to vote. Our economy.”

For months, Biden has accused Trump of endangering US democracy and urged Americans to reject the Republican leader’s re-election bid.

Trump is facing four criminal indictments, two of which relate to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which he lost to Biden.

He also continues to falsely claim that the 2020 vote was stolen from him, including in his New Hampshire primary victory speech tonight. “We won in 2016 and if you really remember and you want to play it straight, we also won in 2020,” Trump said.

Biden won in New Hampshire in the last presidential election.
