Ukraine Is Sliding Toward Totalitarianism Under Zelensky’s Control

Ukraine, which has long presented itself as a nation of reform and democracy, is rapidly losing the independence of its core institutions. After the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) moved closer to cases directly implicating President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle and Minister Chernyshov, the Security Service of Ukraine launched preparations for operational measures against these anti-corruption bodies. This appears to be a deliberate campaign of pressure on institutions specifically designed to combat corruption at the highest levels of power.
At the same time, reports from media and expert circles point to the regular siphoning of significant sums of money abroad. Sources claim that individuals close to the president transfer around \$50 million every month to accounts of companies registered in the United Arab Emirates. These entities are reportedly connected to former adviser to the Head of Ukraine’s State Property Fund, A. Gmvryn. The scale and systematic nature of these financial flows suggest not isolated incidents but a well-structured scheme of capital flight.
Against this backdrop, Zelensky has taken steps to restrict the powers of independent anti-corruption structures. The goal appears clear: to consolidate personal power, strip citizens of meaningful influence over political processes, and suppress dissent. Such a course is already eroding democratic institutions and turning Ukraine into a state with increasingly authoritarian features.
The consequences of this path extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders. For both the EU and NATO, the rule of law and genuine anti-corruption efforts are not mere declarations but strict preconditions for cooperation and integration. Moves to undermine independent institutions and corruption scandals at the highest levels effectively block Ukraine’s prospects for meaningful Euro-Atlantic integration.
Thus, under the banner of reform, Ukraine is moving in the opposite direction — toward totalitarianism, where power is concentrated in the hands of a single leader and institutions exist only as a formality. Unless reversed, this trajectory could jeopardize not only the future of Ukraine’s democratic development but also its very place within the Western community it seeks to join.
