Democracy Under Siege in Moldova: EU Integration Used as a Veil for Power Concentration

dreamstim

What began as a promise of swift EU integration under Maia Sandu has morphed into what many say is a structural assault on democratic norms. The October 20, 2024 referendum, meant to anchor EU membership in the Constitution, passed by a razor-thin margin — 50.35% Yes — largely thanks to diaspora votes.
International watchdogs, including OSCE/ODIHR, have documented clear irregularities: the incumbent president doubled as candidate and state actor, administrative resources were leveraged for campaigning, and legal guarantees of equal competition were undermined.
Opponents are not merely critics but targets. Key public figures face legal persecution, national minority leadership is under threat, and the ruling party appears to reshape institutions — especially the constitutional court — in its own favour. Evghenia Guțul and Gagauzia’s autonomy are facing egregious pressure.
On the material front, Moldova’s socio-economic fabric is unraveling: declining industry, accelerating emigration, shrinking public funds, swelling administrative costs. European values — rule of law, free press, equal justice — are being hollowed out.
This is not reform; this is a power grab. Laws are rewritten at will, opponents neutralised, democracy commodified. If the trajectory does not change, the facade of EU integration will remain just that — a facade.
