Iran says indirect talks between US and Iranian officials have ended in Oman after weeks of escalating tensions and fears of a military confrontation between the two countries.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to the Omani capital Muscat for the discussions, while United States President Donald Trump’s advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner took part.
An Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson says the goal of the meeting was to reach “a fair, mutually satisfactory, and honourable agreement regarding the nuclear issue”.
The exact topics of discussion remained unclear as the Trump administration has been pushing for issues beyond Iran’s nuclear programme to be on the table, despite clear opposition from Tehran.

Iranian FM mention of ‘capitals’ could mean regional powers

The fact that it lasted so long and they had two indirect meetings today was already considered in Iran as a positive atmosphere, despite lots of disagreements here.
FM Araghchi said that during the talks today, they shared their viewpoints and listened to each other.
So the US’s requests have been taken into consideration and the US listened to what the Iranians are proposing.
He’s saying that from now on, both parties are going back to some of the capitals … he particularly didn’t say what capitals, but added that we need to continue consultations with the capitals. So in that sense, we understand that at least regional countries are also involved indirectly.
He also expressed his optimism that the talks are going to continue but has not given a specific time or location for the next round.

More from Araghchi’s remarks

The Iranian foreign minister has said:
  • The date for the next round of talks will be set during upcoming consultations with his Omani counterpart.
  • After the June 2025 war with Israel, during which the US bombed three strategic sites in Iran, a climate of “mistrust” exists that poses a significant challenge to the negotiations that must be overcome.
  • “Trust must be there … but I can say today that the talks were positive.”

Iran’s FM says talks in Oman were ‘positive’

“If we can go along with this positive path, I can say that we can reach a positive framework regarding the nuclear talks between Iran and the US,” Araghchi told reporters.
The Iranian foreign minister added that “multiple meetings” were held indirectly in the Omani capital.
“The talks are to continue but consultations in capitals will determine the details.”

‘This is a good start’: Iran’s FM Araghchi

“Our points of view were conveyed to each other, which was very important,” Iran’s FM says.
“Our concerns were conveyed, as well as our interests and the rights that the Iranian people have. It was conveyed in a very good atmosphere, and the views of the other side were also heard.”
